Importance of information security to enterprise-scale businesses

In this blog, we unpack how the importance of digital transformation has dramatically increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the rush to digitally transform and become remote, security is often left behind. When questioned, 79% of executives said that cyber attacks are one of the biggest risks facing their organisation. Thankfully, information security is growing alongside transforming businesses. However, not all businesses know how to keep their security up to date, leaving them vulnerable to cyberattacks.

At our 2021 Grow with Inbound conference, Huble Digital CEO Bob Dearsley sat down with Gregor Hufenreuter, Senior Director of Sales at HubSpot in Germany. They chatted about Huble’s recent ISO 27001:2013 accreditation and how HubSpot is staying up to date with information security, as well as HubSpot’s new EU data centre. Let’s unpack why you need to stay up to date with your security, according to Gregor.

Why do you need to increase your security?

Watch the full interview in this video.

Why do you need to increase your security?

Rapid data transformation leaves your business and customers vulnerable to cyberattacks. Increasing security will not only benefit your business but also your employees and customers.

Below are reasons to make information security your top priority.

  • Protect collected data. Customers and employees trust you to keep their data safe. Personal information is often susceptible to cyberattacks due to its sensitive nature. A cyberattack could easily open up new threats to personal data, like cyber crimes. By safeguarding their personal information, clients and employees are more likely to have trust in your abilities.

  • Safeguard your technology. Each business has its own “behind the scenes" technology that keeps them operating smoothly. Lack of security can leave your platforms open to attack. If attacked, you’ll be left without your platforms for your team to work on and without the data they need. Not only could you lose valuable data, but also time.

  • Protects your ability to function remotely. Companies today need to safely operate from remote locations, including coffee shops and public spaces that leave them vulnerable on public networks. Updating your security will grant your employees more freedom and also give you peace of mind when not in the office.

Gregor believes that COVID-19 has been the driving force for companies to start making security changes. Consumers have also become more aware of their data and where it is being stored. This has led to a surge in the transformation that few can fully keep up with.

4 solutions to fill your security gap

When it comes to increasing your security, very few grasp just how important it is for your businesses day to day activities. Below are a few reasons why security should become your top priority.

  • Align security with your broader goals. Security should not be an afterthought. Rather, it should remain one of your company's top goals every year. Keeping your security in tip-top shape should be just as important as sales targets.

  • IT is essential. IT departments are no longer an insignificant department in your business. They are an essential part of the everyday running of your business. They are just as important as other teams and should be given full attention.

  • Retrain employees on security. Employees should be refreshed on security practices and new developments regularly. Simple training should be more frequent and employees should be aware of evolving data protection practices.

  • Stay up to date. Thinking you’re up to date on security will only leave you complacent and open to more attacks. Your security should constantly be updating itself. Gregor believes that you should prepare your business with long-term security and not short-term solutions.

At Huble Digital, we have undertaken many precautions to protect our information. Through the use of due diligence processes, training and onboarding and following our own policies and guidelines, we have helped to protect our data, while maintaining a standard of understanding across the team.

And it doesn’t end there.

HubSpot understands the increasing concerns regarding where data is hosted and stored, that’s why Gregor was excited to tell us more about the first regional data centre in the European Union. Their hope is that European customers (and customers with business in Europe) will feel more confident as a HubSpot customers going forward.

More than just a certificate

Information security is more than just processes. It is an active commitment that your business has to make to protect its data. As such, businesses should ensure their security is up to date and all employees follow relevant rules and best practices.

Huble Digital CSO Rowan Reid had this to say about our information security: “We recognise the importance of having a strong focus on information security. We have an established team which is dedicated to addressing, monitoring and ever-improving the controls and measures that we have in place to address information security risk within our business.”

Huble runs an Information Security Management System that governs the policies, procedures, processes and workflows we use to protect our data security. We have had our ISMS accredited to ISO/IEC 27001:2013 to ensure our information security practises are based on global expert opinion.
